Braindead – Star Trek – 17 Aug 2007

The first recording today is from Film4 as part of their FrightFest season. It’s Peter Jackson’s Braindead, an astonishingly gory but also very funny movie about zombies in 1950s New Zealand. I did start watching this, thinking about what I was going to talk about, but then checked my back catalogue to find that I’d already looked at it, and actually mentioned some of the things I was going to write. I’m nothing if not consistent.

Media Centre Description: Gory comic horror from New Zealand. A young man and his girlfriend are plunged into a nightmarish world of zombies after his possessive mother is bitten by a deadly Sumatran rat monkey. Thanks to mother, numerous locals enter the realm of the living dead – and Lionel’s cellar can only hold its gruesome residents for so long.

This looks like an edited recording, so the only thing after it is a trail for the film Creep.

The next recording starts with the end of an episode of How I Met Your Mother.

There’s a trail for Saxondale and one for Grownups.

Then, another episode of Star TrekThe Savage Curtain. The one with Abraham Lincoln. I’ve looked at this on one of my tapes.

Media Centre Description: Classic sci-fi drama series. Unable to believe the evidence of his own eyes, an incredulous Kirk turns from his video screen to order presidential honours for the arrival of Abraham Lincoln.

There’s a BBC2 ident themed for the new series The Restaurant

Plus another trail for Tribe.

Then the next episode of Star Trek starts, and this recording ends.

The next recording is that next episode, but you can tell that I was recording Braindead at the same time, because this recording starts just a second or two after the previous episode stops – a sure sign that only one TV tuner was available.

This episode is All Our Yesterdays, which is on one of my tapes, but I didn’t say anything about it.

Kirk, McCoy and Spock beam down to a planet whose star is going nova – in 3 and a half hours. Surely any such mission should have happened months or years ago? Anyway, they discover the whole population has gone, except for one man, who introduces himself as a librarian. His name is Mr Atoz, and I have literally only just realised that means he’s called A to Z. I am very stupid.

Mr Atoz is not very helpful in explaining why he’s there, and there are several copies of him. The library is full of metal discs which show images from the past.

But when Kirk hears a scream, he walks through a doorway and vanishes.

McCoy and Spock follow him, but they end up in the Ice Age.

But there’s one other person there – Zarabeth. McCoy is frozen for a time, but Spock seems to be quite taken by her. She was sentenced to the Ice Age because she tried to murder a tyrant.

Kirk is arrested for witchcraft, when people hear him talking to McCoy and Spock through the portal. He learns that the prosecutor is also returned from the future.

Zarabeth tells Spock that they can’t go back through the portal, because the Atavachron modifies their cellular structure. Spock breaks the news to McCoy.

McCoy doesn’t accept they can’t get back, and they have an argument. “Now, you listen to me, you pointed-eared Vulcan!” Spock gets in his face. “I don’t like that. I don’t think I ever did, and now I’m sure.” “What’s happening to you, Spock?” “Nothing that shouldn’t have happened long ago.” McCoy realises that Spock is regressing to the way Vulcans were 5,000 years ago.

Kirk gets out of prison with the help of the prosecutor, who tells him that because he wasn’t fully processed by the Atavachron, he can get back to the future. He finds the portal.

Spock has definitely loosened up.

Back in the Library, Atoz doesn’t want to help Kirk, and they fight. But eventually he’s able to persuade Atoz to help him locate the time period where Spock and McCoy are.

McCoy realises that they can both go back, so Spock has to make an emotional farewell.

They get back to the present, and Mr Atoz switches discs and runs through the portal. “He had his escape planned. I’m glad he made it.”

Media Centre Description: Kirk spends the last hours of a doomed planet in a library with an extraordinary database, which strips 50 centuries of Vulcan civilisation from Mr Spock.

After this, another trail for Saxondale. And for England v Germany.

Then BBC Two closes down with Pages from Ceefax.
