The Bourne Identity – Mark Lawson Talks to Sanjeev Bhaskar – Proms on Four 2007 – 20 Aug 2007

Today’s first recording is an edited recording of The Bourne Identity from ITV2. I’ve started coming across these recordings in the last few weeks. They’re in the WTV file format, which Microsoft Media Centre brought in to cope with HD broadcasts. I think it’s MPEG4 basically, as opposed to the MPEG2 used by the normal DVR-MS format these were originally recorded in. Or more accurately, the MPEG2 transport streams come straight from the broadcast stream, and the DRV-MS is just the container format. So I did re-encode a number of my recordings (and edited them to remove ads and continuity) because the WTV codec makes smaller files than DVR-MS. It does slightly ruin part of the point of the blog, but it made sense at the time.

The film is still very entertaining. Matt Damon is fished out of the sea by some fishermen, one of whom has enough medical knowledge to take two bullets out of his back, and also finds a tiny device under his skin which projects a Swiss bank account number.

Somewhere in the US, Chris Cooper plays Conklin, who is in charge of the government organisation for whom Damon was working.

Bourne goes to Switzerland. He’s stopped by some police in a park, and suddenly discovers that he’s really good at punching people.

Somewhere else in US Government, they’re watching President Wombosi telling the press that he was the subject of an attempted assassination. He’s living in exile in Paris, and it’s fairly clear that his case is linked to Jason Bourne.

Present at this meeting is Brian Cox as Ward Abbott, and afterwards he goes straight to see Conklin to ask him if he had anything to do with the assassination attempt on Wombosi. It’s part of an operation called Treadstone.

At the bank Bourne opens up his safety deposit box to find a lot of cash, multiple passports in different names, and a gun.

Leaving the bank he realises he’s being followed so he goes to the US Embassy. But very soon he’s challenged by armed guards, so he has to do more punching, and get out by climbing down a wall.

Outside he finds Marie (Franke Potente, who was in Run, Lola, Run) who was also at the Embassy, and he persuades her to give him a lift by offering her a huge wodge of cash.

They get to Paris, and Bourne finds the apartment on his passport. He tries to find out about another name on another passport, John Michael Kane, and is told that Kane died two weeks ago. He’s nervous that there might be someone around, instincts which prove correct when another Treadstone agent, activated by Conklin’s team, comes smashing through the window with a machine gun.

Bourne manages to subdue him, and asks Marie to check what he’s carrying for clues about who he is and who he’s working for. She freaks out when she finds not only a surveillance photo of Bourne, but one of her too, and she realises that she’s into something much bigger than she thought.

Also in Paris is Julia Stiles, who’s working for Conklin. She reports Bourne taking out their assassin.

Bourne and Marie run from the police in a very good car chase.

President Wombosi is shown the corpse of “John Michael Kane”, Bourne’s other identity. He says it’s not him.

Back in his apartment, Wombosi is killed by another Treadstone agent, Clive Owen (codename The Professor).

Abbott goes to see Conklin when he receives the news about Wombosi. Conklin lies, telling him it must have been Bourne, finishing the assignment. “He’s following a protocol. Now that he’s completed the mission, we think he’ll come back in. They always do.”

Bourne and Marie get phone records from the hotel where “Kane” was staying, and find the places he’d phoned. The number in Paris sold yachts. Bourne visits, and is recognised as Mr Kane. He gets information about their yachts, one of which belonged to President Wombosi.

Following this clue, they go to Wombosi’s house to find it surrounded by police. Bourne learns from the newspapers that “It says that three weeks before he was killed, Mr. Wombosi told police that a man came onto his yacht five miles off the coast of Marseille and tried to kill him. It says that he chased the man off the boat and shot him twice in the back. It says I’m an assassin.”

Treadstone are trying to locate places where Marie might take Bourne, places she’s lived over the past few years.

Bourne takes Marie out of town to a place she stayed with friends. They got no answer, so she thinks her friend can’t be there right now. But when they get there, and break into the house, they find a Christmas tree with lights on. And then her friend, Eamon, arrives with his two small children.

Treadstone trace the call Marie made to the house, so they send The Professor there. Bourne is tipped off when the children say they can’t find the family dog. He makes Eamon and the children get into the basement for safety. Then he finds a shotgun, and goes out to find whoever is hunting him. He blows up a gas tank to make it harder for his pursuer.

There’s a cat and mouse chase, before Bourne gets close enough to shoot him. Bourne asks him who he works for, and he tells him about Treadstone. This is a tiny part for Clive Owen, but he makes an impression.

Bourne gives Marie the rest of the money, and tells her to go and make a new life, where they can’t find her. “What are you going to do?” “I’ll end it.”

Bourne calls Treadstone from the phone he finds in the Professor’s bag. He tells Conklin he wants to meet him. “Five thirty p.m. Paris, today. Pont Neuf, you come alone, you walk to the middle of that bridge, you take off your jacket, face east, I’ll redial this number.” Conklin flies to France, and goes to the bridge. Bourne can see the plethora of security around the bridge. He phones him. “I told you to come alone. I guess that was too complicated. So try this, I’m gone.” But Bourne puts a tracker on one of the security vans.

Later, Bourne gets into their field office and confronts Conklin, asking hi what Treadstone is. “Who am I?” “You’re a U.S. government property. You’re a malfunctioning $30 million weapon. You’re a total goddamn catastrophe. […] Mr. Wombosi was supposed to be dead three weeks ago. He was supposed to have died in a way where the only possible explanation was that he’d been murdered by a member of his own entourage. I don’t send you to kill. I send you to be invisible. I send you because you don’t exist.”

“You put together a meeting with Wombosi. You found the security cover. You broke into the office for Christ’s sake. You’re the one who picked the yacht as a goddamn strike point. You picked a boat. You picked a day. You tracked the crew, the crew, the fuels. You told us where. You told us when. You hid out on that boat five days. You were in, Jason. You were in. It was over.” And Bourne finally remembers. He was one the boat, Wombosi was watching TV, Bourne points a gun at his head, then sees the eyes of Wombosi’s young child looking up at him. He can’t kill him.

Bourne tells Conklin he’s not playing any more. “Jason Bourne is dead. You hear me? He drowned two weeks ago. You’re gonna go tell em that Jason Bourne is dead. You understand? Where are you gonna go? I swear to God, if I even feel somebody behind me, there is no measure to how fast and how hard I will bring this fight to your doorstep. I’m on my own side now.”

But there’s lots of other men with guns around, and there’s a big shootout, part of which involves Bourne shooting with two guns at once, one of which is upside down.

To get out from the top of a tall staircase, he pushes another of the goons off the edge and rides him down, shooting another one on the stairs as he passes. This is all very cool.

As Bourne walks out, Conklin follows after him, and there’s yet another Treadstone agent waiting outside. But that agent is waiting for Conklin, not Bourne.

Abbott gives the order to shut it all down, and we see him testifying before a committee. “The Treadstone Project has actually already been terminated. It was designed primarily as a sort of advanced game program. We hoped it might build into a training platform, but quite honestly, for a strictly theoretical exercise, the cost-benefit ratio was just too high. It’s all but decommissioned at this point.” He then goes on to talk about a new project, called Blackbriar. I’m sure that’s a perfectly above board project operated purely for the good of humanity.
