The next recording is the season 5 premiere of Smallville: Superman the Early Years – Arrival. It comes after a rather cataclysmic season finale.

Clark is in the Arctic, and creates the Fortress of Solitude with his magic jewel. Inside, the voice of Jor-El talks to him (in the voice of Terence Stamp, which always slightly throws me).

Back in Smallville, one of the meteors was a kryptonian space craft. Lana finds it, but is immediately confronted by two Kryptonians who are extremely unfriendly.

There’s no “Take Me To Your Leader” with these two.

Lois arrives at the Clark Farm to find it almost completely destroyed by a meteor, and Jonathan desperately looking for Martha in the wreckage. She’s alive, but badly hurt.

Lex wakes up in the cave. Chloe was there with him but she’s not there any more. The Kryptonians arrive, see that he’s got one of the keys, and ask him if he’s Kal-El before discarding him because he bleeds.

Jor-El sets out the threat for the new series. “The meteor shower is only the precursor. A dark force from Krypton has been awakened, Kal-EI, and its sights are set on Earth.” “What do you want me to do?” “You must do as I tell you and study with diligence, for that is the only way to save this planet.” Stay in school, kids.

Chloe finds her way to the fortress, but it’s very cold. Clark wants to help her. “Kal-EI, you must continue in your education. You cannot stop.” “She’s my friend. She needs help.” “Your destiny is far greater than saving one human life.” “No, I won’t let her die.” “Each time you let human-learned emotions guide you, you put the fate of the entire planet at risk. That is your weakness, Kal-EI.” “Please, I’m begging you.” “Very well, under one condition. You must return to me before the yellow sun has set.” “I’ll be back. I promise.” “Do not fail me, Kal-EI, or the consequences will be grave.”

Lex finds Lana hobbling on the road. Or rather he drives down this incredibly long and straight road, and still has to brake suddenly when a limping woman walks slowly across the road. It’s my least favourite thing in films and TV. Does nobody watch the road?

Clark has taken Chloe to a hospital in the Yukon. He now knows that she knows his secret and they have a heart to heart. She then learns that Clark is an alien. He hopes she won’t think differently about him. “I think you’re so amazing. You save people’s lives and take zero credit for it. To me, you’re more than just a hero. You’re a superhero.”

Lana wakes up in the Luthor mansion to find Lionel scratching a strange symbol on his beautiful Parquet floor. He’s going to have to use Yellow Pages a lot.

He’s got a little possessed. “The Disciples of Zod. They must be stopped.” “Y-You’re talking about the people from the ship.” “Their home is their only poison. Their home is their only poison” he says, looking at the collection of Kryptonite in their safe.

The Kryptonians are still looking for Kal-El, and they hassle Jonathan and Lois at the hospital. Lana stops them killing her by telling them that Clark is at the Luthor Mansion.

Clark finds Lex at the Kent house. Lex tells him his parents are hurt but safe in hospital. He says he thought he saw Clark in the caves when the meteors hit, but Clark denies it.

Lionel’s plan almost works, but the Kryptonians are able to get out of the safe and seal it up before the Kryptonite can kill them.

Clark arrives. The Kryptonians say they want him to join them “and help us make this savage land our utopia.” When Clark refuses and tells them he’s going to stop them, they try to banish him to the Phantom Zone.

But Clark avoids imprisonment and sends the two of them in there instead.

As Clark makes sure Lana is safe, the sun goes down, thus making Clark miss Jor-El’s deadline (although if it’s summer, surely there’s no sunset near the North Pole?)

He cuts his finger on some glass in Lana’s hair, so he’s not lost his powers.

Lana reads about her ex boyfriend and his mother’s fate. Clark comes to visit, and now he’s no longer superpowered, he seems happy to restart their relationship, as does she.

She tells Clark about the spaceship. He goes to where it landed, and it’s no longer there. It’s now in a Luthorcorp warehhouse. Where it sheds some liquid metal.

Which transforms into James Marsters.

Media Centre Description: New series of the drama following the teenage years of future Superman Clark Kent. Clark is transported to the Fortress of Solitude in the Arctic where his biological father, Jor-El, tells him he must stay and prepare to save the planet.
