Waking the Dead – Heroes – Heroes Unmasked – Hyperdrive – 08 Aug 2007

When did Wednesday become such a busy day for TV? And in August. Oh well, let’s crack on.

The first recording starts with the end of Vet Rescue. There’s a new trail for DanceX.

There’s another trail for The Inspector Linley Mysteries.

Then, Waking the DeadUndertow part 2.

Grace interviews Ben Elwes about his missing girlfriend Sophie Raikes, so see if they can make some connection between her and Steven Hunt beyond her picture in the local newspaper. He does remember one incident. “After a shift at the hospital she found she had a flat tyre, so she called me and I went down to change it for her. Well, it had been slashed, I mean, it looked like that. Well, to me it looked like that. She claimed on insurance and that was it, but… I just thought, you know…” But as he’s leaving, Grace is distracted by a phone call, and he looks at the incident room with all the information on it, including Steven Hunt’s name.

Spence and Stella are tailing Hunt. His car radiator appears to overheat, and he has to stop and top up the coolant which he does with a huge bottle of water that he filled up just before leaving on this trip. “Well at least he came prepared.”

Grace and Felix discuss the case. Grace is wondering why Suzy Jenkins had got into her pyjamas, and yet was running a bath when she was strangled. Felix has been analysing the water found in Phillippa Carrington’s lungs, as she drowned in a canal. But the water doesn’t match the type of water usually found in a canal. “Now the water in Philippa Carrington’s lungs was very slightly alkaline instead.” “Couldn’t that just be a small anomaly in that stretch of canal?” “Yeah, it could. Except I’ve got relatively high levels of chlorine, some aluminium, even a trace of lead.” “OK, you’ll have to explain.” “All these elements are added as part of a standard purification process. The water in her lungs wasn’t from a canal, it was from a tap.” They conclude that Hunt drowned Carrington in a bath, and intended to drown Suzy Jenkins. The water is his thing.

Hunt drives to a swimming pool and goes for a swim. Spence and Stella are watching him do lengths. But neither of them notice (nor do the lifeguards) when Hunt, underwater, grabs another swimmer and pulls her down, holding her underwater until she drowns.

Boyd thinks it’s a good idea to try to drown Hunt in a sink to get him to talk. How he’s survived this long in the police is a mystery. Actually, no, given the real life behaviour of policemen, it’s entirely unsurprising. I guess I hold fictional characters to higher standards.

Boyd needs to get something on Hunt. So he goes completely against character and gives the local newspaper reporter, Sarah Baker, Hunt’s name as the killer of several woman and tells her to print the story.

While Spence and Stella are tailing Hunt in a shopping centre, they spot Ben Elwes following him. He confronts Hunt in a lift and starts beating him up.

Stella pulls Elwes away, and because he doesn’t know she’s a police officer, Hunt naturally hits on her, asking for her number.

Grace visits Hunt’s father. She tells him what they suspect about his son. “Your son is sexually aroused by watching his victims drown.” “Are you a psychologist?” “Yes.” “A profiler?” “If you like.” “I read a headline once, “Psychics versus profilers”. You can guess who won.” “No, I can’t.” “It wasn’t the profilers.” “So would you believe me if I was a psychic?” “It might help if you had some evidence.” “Well, I haven’t. It’s all circumstantial. That’s what I’m here for. I need your help. Your son is a very dangerous man.” “He is my son.” “I know, which must make it unimaginably hard. But nonetheless it’s true.”

The team decide to take advantage of Stella’s encounter with Hunt, and set up a meeting at a pub. But while they’re waiting, Hunt is meeting someone else – the reporter Sarah Baker. Her dead body is found, drowned in a boat house. She was found by a man who kept pigeons there. They figure he must have drowned her using the large water bottle he had. They also notice that a chain was taken from her neck – she wore a silver cross.

Sarah Baker’s notes show she spoke to Ben Elwes about Sophie, and her car tyre being slashed. Grace obtained her records and can’t find any record of the insurance claim Ben said Sophie made on the tyre. And more strangely, the photo of Sophie on the records is different to the photo in the local newspaper – they mixed up the photos and printed another nurse’s photo.

Felix has gone over Hunt’s car to find any possible evidence that Sarah Baker was there, but it’s spotless. Spence notices some bird poop on the convertible fabric. So they visit the pigeon fancier who found Sarah’s body, and take samples from the pigeons to get a DNA match. Yes, it turns out you can dust for bird poop.

They talk to Ben Elwes again, asking why he hadn’t mentioned that the picture in the paper wasn’t Sophie, and why he only mentioned the story about the car tyre after he’d spoken to Sarah Baker. They think he attacked Hunt to make it seem like Hunt was responsible for Sophie’s disappearance. When it was Ben who killed her, and buried her in the back garden.

Hunt’s father is fishing, and he finds the silver cross that he’d been told was taken from Sarah Baker, in his tackle box.

The DNA match on the pigeon poop is a positive match, which puts Hunt’s car at the site of the murder.

When the team bring Hunt’s mother back to her house, the father tells them “He isn’t here any more.” They find Hunt drowned in his bath. “There’s no crazy aunt, no family secret, no voice in his head except his own. He was my son… and he couldn’t help himself. He did want to, he couldn’t stop.” “We would have stopped him.” “When? You were taking too long.” Grim stuff.

She’s getting into a lift when one of Linderman’s thugs gets in and starts threatening her and Micah. So her alter ego takes over and pummels him. “If you threaten our son again, I’m going to put my heel through your skull.” Then, she goes back to Nathan’s suite, and completes the transaction.

Claire meets up with the murderous quarterback, pretending that she can’t remember anything about what happened. He’s so stupid he even lets her drive his car. “You know how to drive a stick-shift?” “There’s a lot of things that I know. Like what you did to me.” “What’d I do to you? I knew it. I knew this would happen. You get drunk, you come on to me, and it’s my fault?” “Liar.” “Can’t rape the willing. You wanted it as bad as I did. Stop the car.” “As bad as Laurie Trammel?” “Laurie Trammel is a slut.” “Is that what you’re gonna say about me?” “I already do.” “You’re just gonna keep at it, aren’t you?” “You should let it go, Claire. There’s nothing you can do about it.”

Peter and Mohinder are on a subway train when all of a sudden, time stops for everyone except Peter. Then he’s approached by a vaguely familiar man. “Peter Petrelli?” “How is this happening?” “I’m sorry if I scared you. You look different without your scar.” “I don’t know you, buddy.” “Not yet. My name is Hiro Nakamura. I’m from the future. I have message for you.” What a fabulous cliffhanger, and only slightly spoiled by having featured in the trail. I’m really enjoying this so far.

After this there’s a trail for BBC Two’s Autumn Season.

Then another Language of Football trail. And a mention of the PPC’s football phone-in 606 whose messageboards were the bane of my life at one point, because they were the most high-traffic boards, so we had to do a lot of optimisation to get the site to run reasonably smoothly. I think those boards might also have been plagued by some people working at a British Gas call centre who couldn’t get to the general internet, but could get to the BBC, who were pretty foul people, and also, I was told, would arrange drug deals on the boards. I’m glad I didn’t have to moderate them.
