The first recording today is a bit messed up, with large parts of it full of MPEG noise, so I won’t be looking at Charlie and the Chocolate Factory today.
Media Centre Description: Tim Burton’s retelling of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s story. A young boy from a poor family wins one of five golden tickets granting him a tour of a wonderful chocolate factory run by an eccentric confectioner, along with four other lucky children. During the boy’s magical tour, each of the ghastly children accompanying him is mysteriously eliminated.

After this, the recording stops with the start of the Nick Hancock game show Duel.
The next recording is a repeat of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles – Heavy Metal.
Media Centre Description: Explosive, gritty new action series based on the blockbuster Terminator films. Sarah Connor battles to protect her son John, a future leader in the war between humans and machines. Sarah and John fear for their lives when they discover that Cromartie is still alive.

Following on is a repeat of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles – Queen’s Gambit.
Media Centre Description: Explosive, gritty new action series based on the blockbuster Terminator films. Sarah Connor battles to protect her son John, a future leader in the war between humans and machines. Sarah is dismayed to learn that the sinister Turk computer has been rebuilt.

Next, the only recording today that isn’t messed up or a repeat, is an episode of Love Soup – Ragged Claws. It’s missing the very start, though.
Alice meets a nice young man at the counter, and they exchange details.
Immediately after this, a man on a Brompton folding bike collides with her (I used to ride a Brompton to work in London, by the way). It’s Tony Gardner as Matthew Chater, who’s very concerned about her. “But I’m definitely paying for this to be cleaned. No arguments.” “Oh, for goodness’ sake. No, no, no.” “Here, I’m serious. The thing is, I’m sorry, but I’m in a bit of a rush because I was on my way to buy a newspaper. And, er, if I don’t get my skates on, I’m…” “No, no, that’s fine. You get along.” “And I shall definitely expect to hear from you, OK, about this. Promise? Or I’ll get no sleep.” “All right, then. Understood. You have a safe journey.”
Her colleague Milly (Monserrat Lombard) also has a potential romance. “Oh, right. This wouldn’t be Gavin from the stock room we’re talking about?” “As it happens, he’s invited me to a funeral.” “When was this?” “Well, you know that aunt of his, Mrs. Atterbury, used to work in the wages department here till a few months ago. Apparently, last night, she just collapsed and died from a massive stroke. And the two of them, by all accounts, were really close. So I said, if you’d like a bit of moral support, I’d be glad to go along.” “So he didn’t exactly ask you, then, as such.” “Sounds like a really hot date.”
Rachel, Matthew Chater’s PA comes to make sure she’s OK after their collision last night. “He was so sorry he had to dash away like that.” “I know he was in a hurry to buy a newspaper or something.” “Oh, yes. That would be just a small regional title from the East Essex Recorder Group to add to his UK press holdings. It was more of a corporate merger than a takeover.” And she says he’s invited her to dinner tonight.
He picks her up in his car, and Rachel is there as well. He has to be away at a certain time to catch the Eurostar, and they call ahead to order their food.
Later, Alice hears how Milly got on with her funeral date. She’s upset that Cleo came along, and also offered “moral support”.
Alice gets a call about her date – from Rachel the PA. “No, I did have a really lovely time.” “Oh, good, because Matthew did as well. And since the other night, he basically can’t stop thinking about you.” She reads from her notes. “It’s like every time he closes his eyes, your face seems to be there.”
He takes her to another party, and there’s a moment when two of the other guests get a bit sneery that Alice works in a shop.
Matthew has to go somewhere for business, so Alice is offered his flat to stay at, so she doesn’t have to schlep all the way home to Brighton. Rachel shows her around. She also mentions that Matthew has some of her novels. “Well, it’s just a hobby, really, to keep my creative side ticking over. If you need any help getting to sleep tonight, I think they’re all here. He buys them to be kind, bless him. I’m not sure he’s ever read one.”
Alice is honest with Rachel. “I think we both know what’s happening here, Rachel, don’t we? Matthew is actually too busy to have this relationship in person, so he’s delegating it all to you.”
But later Matthew does call. “Look, I’ve had a thought about next week, you know, with you saying it’s your birthday on Thursday. But how would it be if I just cleared a space, 48 hours, and we flew to New York? Just for the night, my treat. The park would be just stunning right now and we can take in a show, go for a meal uptown.”
When she goes to bed she puts on the audio book of Rachel’s novel. It’s a bit of a bonkbuster. “As a surge of unquenchable desire coursed through her loins. His head was buried snugly in her lap now, like a robin in its nest.”
Milly and Cleo are still arguing over Gavin. Milly thinks that Cleo stopped going after him because she was told something bad about him. Cleo says it was because he preferred Milly. But now, because Milly was paranoid, she’s dumped him. Alice tells them she’s off somewhere but won’t say where.
But it’s not New York with Matthew, it’s a date with the other man she met that day, who’s a lot more normal.
He sees her safely to her flat (in Brighton? Does he live there too?) and she nervously invites him in for coffee, but gets a surprise.
Media Centre Description: Comedy series chronicling eternally-single Alice’s quest for the perfect partner. Alice finds herself literally swept off her feet by the suave and successful Matthew Chater, into a dizzying world of smart cars, up-market restaurants and swish parties. Meanwhile, Cleo and Milly go to war over a boy friend, a tee-shirt and a funeral service.

After this, there’s a trail for I’d Do Anything.
And a trail for Gavin and Stacey and a new trail for the Torchwood series finale.
Then, given that today has been mostly repeats and a bad recording, there’s a nice surprise, as the recording continues for another half an hour and there’s a whole episode of The Vicar of Dibley – Community Spirit. I suspect that, because there was a live edition of I’d Do Anything earlier, I probably added plenty of time to the recording here to not miss the end.
The village fayre is happening, and Geraldine thinks it would raise more money than last time if they got a celebrity to open it. She struggles to get anyone until Alice mentions her famous cousin. “The only showbiz person that I knew is my second cousin, but I haven’t seen him since I was four. His name was Reg Dwight. His mum, right, got cross at me because I pulled his hair to stop him playing the piano when a whole handful came out.” So Geraldine suggests she gets in touch, as Reg Dwight is Elton John’s real name.
The village get into the swing of things. “It seemed to him she lived her life like a candle in the wind, never knowing who to cling to when the rain set in.”
But when he turns up, it turns out Reg Dwight is a different Reg Dwight.
Luckily, there’s another unexpected visitor, as Kylie Minogue arrives. “I’m sorry to interrupt. Has Elton arrived?” “Elton?” “Yeah, I heard he was opening the fair. I thought I’d just drop by and surprise him.”
BBC Genome: BBC One London – Saturday 29th March 2008 – 21:35
After this there’s a trail for Casualty 1907 and a trail for the Grand National.
Finally, is a third repeat, of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles – Dungeons and Dragons.
Media Centre Description: Explosive, gritty new action series based on the blockbuster Terminator films. Sarah Connor battles to protect her son John, a future leader in the war between humans and machines. Derek slips in and out of consciousness as Sarah fights to save his life.
