The first recording starts with the end of an episode of The Secret Show that I don’t seem to have kept, which seems unlike me. But my database tells me I have this episode coming up later in the year.
But we do have the next episode of Secret Show – Mission to Monkey Nut Island.
“Now, as you know, my name, for reasons of security, is changed daily. Today, you may call me… Bubbles Kissy Cuddles!”
The UZZ base can turn into a submarine.
Captain Bubbles Kissy Cuddles is fully embracing the nautical theme.
They have to go to Monkey Nut Island to discover what Doctor Doctor is doing there. “It’s a luxury holiday resort for them agents.” “Aw, those guys get all the perks.”
Victor and Anita disguise themselves as Expandables.
Victor comes third in a Victor Volt lookalike contest.
But he wins first prize in the Best Evil Plan competition.
His plan involves a giant bamboo chicken.
Victor and Anita are captured.
They fill UZZ base with porridge and hide in a giant egg.
They release moustache eating moths to eat Bubbles Kissy Cuddles’ moustache. He is undaunted. “You may have taken my moustache, but all that’s done is reveal my stiff upper lip!”
They open the hatches to release all the porridge. “I knew it was a rotten plan all along!” says Doctor Doctor.
Professor Professor has bought Bubbles Kissy Cuddles a replacement moustache.

Andy Goddard: “As we join the story he’s completely bogged down by the monotony and emptiness that is his wretched life.” He’s talking about Owen, in case you couldn’t guess.
Richard Stokes: “One thing we wanted to avoid was to make Owen look dead so we talked a lot about not having him in any kind of makeup, and that he would actually look relatively normal.”
Burn Gorman: “We thought we would just freeze him almost, like he was at the end of episode 6, an keep him like that. The one motif that we did keep was the hand that needs to be dressed.”
Ray Holman: “From the moment that his hand was cut, we knew that we would always have to put bandages on. We do something called costume breakdowns. We take the photographs, we put the scene numbers on the photographs and underneath the list of the scene numbers, We put the notes. Absolutely every single thing they wear is written down for every single scene.”
We hear from James Leigh about filming Owen underwater.
We also get to hear from the guest star, Richard Briers. “Parker is a dying millionaire, and is this old boy who’s very frightened. Naturally, we all love dying, so there are not many laughs, but it’s a very atmospheric scene, I thought rather well written.”
Writer Joe Lidster: “It was brilliant that Richard Briers doesn’t play him too soft, just because he’s an old man dying in a bed doesn’t mean he becomes soft and fluffy.”

The team are after a criminal called Simon Neary. He traffics drugs, guns and rent boys. They tail him to a meeting in a hotel, but when they get there he’s gone, and there’s only a young man called Marcus there, played by Russell Tovey. And it wasn’t a drug or gun deal, they were meeting for sex. He’s Neary’s boyfriend.
Hunt finds his informant, Reeks, who told him about the deal, and tries to get more information. He swears there’s a big shipment coming in.
They spot a meeting, and see Neary looking at guns.
Alex thinks getting Marcus onside will give them a way to get close to Neary.
The rest of the team are having trouble getting past their ingrained homophobia. “Of course, the other reason for your rampant homophobia could be that you’re a bunch of poofters!”
Hunt’s informant is found dead.
He confronts Neary, who doesn’t seem afraid of him.
Alex is trying to get Marcus to help them, when Neary drives past. “Who’s your friend?” “Hi. We go way back. I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, and…” “That’s a flash name for a clip joint.” “It was a bit more upmarket than that, wasn’t it? Trust me.”
They arrange to meet at a nightclub. Ray is asked to go undercover and flirt with Neary. Alex knows how to push his buttons. “Only somebody’s who’s completely secure in their own sexuality could do this. Just treat him like he’s a bird. You know, treat him like you would a woman.” She wants to show Marcus that Neary doesn’t care about him by showing him how he behaves with other men.
Alex meets her mum again.
Marcus comes to Alex and says he’s help her, and that Neary is talking about a big deal.
They put a wire on him and stake out the location. Then Ray and Chris find the gun dealer they’d identified, dead, and no signs of the guns.
They can hear Marcus over the wire, giving the code word to tell them the guns are there, they rush there, but hear gunshots. When they get there, they find Marcus standing over Neary’s dead body.
Alex takes Marcus to see his mother, who he hasn’t seen for a year.
The episode ends on an ominous note, though, as Alex notices a couple of lesions on his neck. “Oh. It’s just a rash.” “Have you seen a doctor about it?” “I’ll get some cream.” “Go to a doctor. Go to a doctor and… Just go to a doctor.”
